The beautiful and helpful staff are the highlight of Sunshine Marine Lodge. The food was excellent, with a wide array of options to choose from. The spa is a fantastic amenity to the lodge, with lots of affordable treatments carried out by the team of great therapists. Yoga with Ana (who is a fantastic teacher) is also a really great addition to the property and I recommend to future guests taking some classes to unwind from your day and carry you into a chilled evening.

It’s very quiet, very few non hotel restaurants, overpriced food everywhere, can’t swim in the sea unless you don’t mind knee deep water. There’s no town, or town centre outside the beach hotels, so a long stay would be challenging if you want more than just lounging by the hotel pool.

Matemwe and its area is a quiet place where you can relax and enjoy the beach, the activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins) especially if you are a couple, because the village is not very full of enterteinments or night parties.

Crystal clear water - despite there being sea urchins - if you have rock/ aqua shoes - you can still swim and explore the waters and reefs.
The beaches are a lot quieter and peaceful than the busier beaches up north.
The tides are also fascinating to watch- you can walk out to the reefs and cycle along the beaches when they go out!

Marafiki gets a 10/10 from us on all fronts - breakfast, lunch, dinner, pool, cleanliness, hospitality, music, sustainability, beach, communication.
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Marafiki after our Safari and had the most fabulous time. The rooms were very clean and quiet, and beautifully set up.
The food is exceptional - please try the tuna tartar and all the specials!
We had a relaxing time at the spa - you must try the full body scrub and massages.
We used the free kayaks during sunset and enjoyed the stunning view from the water. The water is shallow so even if you go far, you can get off the kayak and swim.
Since the hotel is east facing - sunrise is exceptionally beautiful. The water is still and shallow, and you can see all the fisherman walk up to the reef to catch the fish.
The hotel also arranged a cooking lesson in Matamwe village for us - we learned how to cook ‘muchuzi’ from scratch which was a very meaningful experience.
Overall- no negatives. We had the best time and will be back!

The beach is beautiful, but it's not really a beach you can swim on - there's a big tidal range - when it comes in it's quite choppy with lots of seaweed, and when it's out its corally with lots of urchins. But it's interesting to watch the local people looking for octopus and shellfish every day.
It's quite a quiet area - all the bars are part of hotels. A few nice local restaurants around. Quite a lot of beach touts, which we found off putting. Not loads of activities to do in the area - 1/2 day snorkelling/dolphin watching trips at Mnemba Island basically.
This is my first trip to Zanzibar and I decided to start with Mnemba island and hence Matemwe Magic hotel is what I chose! I couldn’t have asked for anything more! Perfect in all ways. The staff is so polite and friendly. They understand you and take care of your requirements.
The rooms are clean and spacious and it feels amazinggg and most importantly safe! Coz I am a solo traveler.
I would totally recommend this hotel for all travelers coming to Zanzibar and especially plan their itinerary which includes Mnemba island!
If you’re looking for a peaceful haven with great comfort and completely quite vibes this is the place to be. Then again most people who head to Matemwe head there for the quiet. It’s closely located to the beach and the owner is very helpful . They have little notes of guidelines inside the rooms and also have tide timings across the day which is super helpful if you want to swim.
The breakfast was delicious with home made jams and baked stuff . Overall it’s a very peaceful vibe.
Hebe Bungalows Lodge is a unique lodging on the northeast shore of Zanzibar. The lodge is enclosed within a high wall and security gate. The road to the lodge is unpaved and rough. It winds through the local village where poverty is evident. The location was good for my snorkeling tour near Mnemba Island. I liked my room (#7) and the view. The staff were professional and friendly. The restaurant was enjoyable and the food was good.
I spent a total of 17 days in Zanzibar house on a solo vacation. I highly recommend this hotel. It’s a great place to relax and the location on the beach is just exquisite. The hospitality from the staff was fantastic, they were well mannered and catered to my needs. I was also moved by the kindness of Max and Mariam, they were very kind to me when I fell ill during my holiday. I can’t say enough of how much I enjoyed my time there.
Matemwe is very quiet in a natural surroundings. The food was very very good in the restaurant with a beautiful view in front of the beach. In the morning during low tide it's worth it to take some shoes and walk with local people in the sea to see some starfishes (do not touch them or take them outside the water, it can kill them). The staff in the hotel and restaurant was kind, smiling and very helpful. We had a wonderful time.
It is the most beautiful and comfortable hotel I've ever seen. it feels very luxurious and you can really relax in the cute rooms and restaurant. The pool area is also amazing and the umbrellas give a welcome relief from the strong sun on the local beach.
The staff are the best, so sweet and attentive. It's very very clean, the staff clean rooms every day and spray against mosquitoes. Food is delicious as well, although pricy.
It’s an absolutely stunning hotel. Best green view from the garden and a beach view from the front. Very clean and comfy rooms which are spacious. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. A clean pool by the beach. I just loved everything about this hotel. I’ll definitely return back in my future holidays and I’ll always recommend my family and friends to visit Zanzibar bahari villas hotel.
We had a very nice time in Hebe lodge. Very cozy and comfortable place , nice atmosphere, stuff were always so helpful and attentive, all food we tried was very fresh and delicious, nice cocktails and breakfast. Located in front of the beach. We also booked a tour with a hotel, was well organized. Owner and stuff of the hotel are very friendly and approachable. Highly recommend!
The location in Matemwe was excellent regarding the beach. The hotel is surrounded by a fishing village which adds to the quaintness. The hotel is very nice in comparison to others around and quite posh without loosing any authenticity and fits perfectly well into the surroundings. The evening entertainment exceeded expectations.
Fell in love with the dawa drink.
Matemwe beach is one of the top beaches in Zanzibar, white sand and a lot of colored little boats on the shoreline. The place is quiet and relaxing, the bar/restaurant sourronded by beautiful plants and trees. This sounds authentical african. Two steps from the restaurant and you are on the beach. This is really worth.
The hotel has a beautiful view, it is very nice and quiet. The staff is amazing! So friendly and willing to help, they make you feel special. I must say Salum is one of the servers who stood up for us, he is super kind and friendly and always ensured we were having an awesome time with nothing to worry about.
Amazing food and drinks, smiling staff that will care for your every request, great rooms, a wonderful garden and 2 clean pools with fantastic views. This is the best hotel of the 7 others that I stayed at in Zanzibar and I will be back for sure! Thank you to the management and the team!
The owners of the place were wonderful people. Really committed in providing the best possible experience for their guests. The location was great and the small hotel was built with the intention of providing quality hospitality but with maintaining the local colour.
First trip to Zanzibar, the Queen Zanzibar is such a great hotel, staff is kind and very helpful, room are very clean and beautiful, many activities, perfect pool and access to the beach, it’s a 10 out of 10 !
Perfect hotel right next to the beach. amazing staff and good response from the host. Great breakfast values for money for sure. Hussein was always ready to help very engaging. Best bar attender around 💯
It was great being right on the wide, white sand beach. The atmosphere of the small hotel was easy-going and the food was so good that we didn't venture to other places to eat.
Very clean and new, everything was top notch for a stay in Matemwe. The location next to One Ocean dive shop was spectacular and the hosts were super friendly
