About
The largest of Pittsburgh's historic regional parks at 644 acres, Frick Park is also the youngest. Although Henry Clay Frick bequeathed the original 151 acres to the city in 1919, the park did not open until 1927 after additional land had been acquired. Most recently, 106 acres were annexed to the park as part of the process that created the Summerset at Frick Park housing development and restored the Nine Mile Run stream valley. Today, Frick Park stretches from its northern borders in Point Breeze down to the Monongahela River. Known as Pittsburgh’s woodland park for its extensive trails throughout steep valleys and wooded slopes, Frick Park is an ideal escape from the noise of the city. Birding enthusiasts love to visit Clayton Hill, where well over 100 species of birds have been recorded. Children flock to the famous Blue Slide Playground and learn about nature at the Frick Environmental Center. The park also features red clay tennis courts, baseball fields, and the only public lawn bowling green in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has completed extensive ecological restoration work in Frick Park since the Conservancy’s first capital project in 2000, the restoration of Reynolds Street gatehouse entrance. Currently, the Parks Conservancy is working to rebuild the Frick Environmental Center to replace the burned-down structure and create an urban hub for environmental education in Pittsburgh.

Beautiful park. Even though this is super close to downtown Pittsburgh it's very quiet and peaceful. There's loads of trails both paved and unpaved and with varying levels of difficulty. Perfect place to go either alone or with friends.

We were visiting Pittsburgh and decided to go for a walk in Frick Park. Even in the dead of winter, this place is beautiful. Highly recommend!

I spend quite a bit of time in Pittsburgh and I visit this park often with my dog who travels with me. As much as I adore this park I was very disappointed with many people I met there today who were all dog owners. As we were taking our usual walk, keeping in mind that the park is signed as a leashed dog only park, we ran in to 8-10 dogs who were off leash and surrounded us. The owners were calling their dogs back and of course they were not coming back to the owners. Unfortunately the owners and I had words and their response was "well we live here."
Oddly enough I do not blame the dogs, I blame the owners. Unfortunately I will not be able to comfortably walk my dog there anymore.

Frick Park is a vast wooded area extending a couple of miles along a ravine between the Squirrel Hill and Regent Square neighborhoods. For children, there are two nice playgrounds, one at Forbes and Braddock and one at Beechwood Blvd and Nicholson. The latter is known as Blue Slide Park. Take some waxed paper for extra fast trips down the big blue cement slide build into the hillside. Also, down along the beautiful Tranquil Trail at the bottom of the ravine runs a lovely creek where kids (and dogs) can get happily wet and muddy. There are fallen logs and rocky hillsides to explore too. The trail is stroller friendly, unpaved but wide and flat. Much of the valley is flat enough to be wheelchair accessible and there are some paved paths near the parking lot off Hutchinson (see below). Watch out for poison ivy if the kids get off the trails! There are two off leash play areas for dogs, one along Tranquil Trail at the "Hot Dog Dam" and one up by Blue Slide Park. Endless mountain biking trails honeycomb the woods providing entertainment for bikers, hikers and dog walkers too. You can walk or ride for hours, going all the way out to the Monongahela River if you feel ambitious. Or if you feel refined and languorous on a summer evening, you can check the lawn bowling greens at Reynolds and Homewood, across from the Frick Museum, and see if anyone is out bowling. There is parking off Braddock south of Forbes, along Beechwood Boulevard, on the streets near the Frick Museum, off Commercial Street near the Irish Center, and in a hard to find lot accessed from the southwest end of Hutchinson Avenue in Regent Square (at Hutchinson and Richmond). There are portable outhouses near the playgrounds and along Tranquil Trail near the parking lot off Hutchinson. The Frick Museum has toilets and admission is free. There are a couple of restaurants across the street from the playground at Forbes and Braddock.

This park is located in the East End in the East Liberty/ Point Breeze neighborhood off Homewood Avenue and adjacent to the Frick Museum. Point Breeze is the kind of area that went from upper class to middle class to downright dangerous and is now turning the corner back to prosperous. Through it all, Frick Park remained a nice escape for a quiet hike and a taste of nature. Trails are well marked and shared by hikers, joggers and bikers. It's not a huge park but there are enough trails to get your daily exercise and a true gem in the urban environment.

Frick park is a phenomenal place. In the eastern part of Pittsburgh, you'll find very few people who don't already know this or will challenge such a statement.

Many know it mostly for the play ground on the corner of Forbes and South Braddock avenue in the Regent Square neighborhood. There you find a melting pot of children and parents on on swings, slides, and jungle gyms. Beside it, a popular baseball diamond used by local little leagues and softball teams. Next some of the nicest outdoor clay tennis courts you'll find in the region and a n environmental center where you'll find the beginning of some of the most popular trails.

Then you have another piece to this wonderful place which is arguably the best play ground portion of Frick in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood known as the blue slide park by many. You'll quickly notice the blue slides and unique jungle gym features here but also a long paved walking trail heading back toward a wooded area. Along the way, a series of outdoor fitness stations that will trump many expensive gyms will whip anyone into better shape paired with a jog. At the deepest part of this section is a very popular dog park.

Lower Frick sits in a valley between the previously mentioned major sections. this is where you'll find a soccer field that also is used for ultimate frisbee pick up games. Almost every known trail can be picked up at some point in its respective journey here. Several small streams meet a larger creek full of tadpoles. Preserved wetlands house birds, frogs, and a variety of plant species.

There are several other pieces that are not as well known. my favorite being in the Point Breeze neighborhood. Another smaller section hidden behind a residential dead-end street in regent Square.

The bottom line here is that this park is a must visit if you enjoy nature walks, trail jogs, hiking, mountain biking, recreational field sports, play time, or admiring nature. Please do your part in keeping this park beautiful when you visit.

This sprawling 644 acre green space is truly a marvel, a bit of "wilderness" in the midst of the city, with a stream running through it, miles of trails for hiking, biking or cross country skiing, clay tennis courts, soccer fields, an off-leash dog park, playgrounds and wetlands full of wildlife (including over 100 species of birds) and a recently renovated "net zero" green-built environmental center. It is fantastic to be able to walk for hours through the woods when you are in the center of a bustling metro area. The trails are wide and well maintained and some are wheelchair accessible. I chose to buy both homes I have owned here specifically because they were handy to the park and in fact it is one of the reasons I returned to the city after relocating some years ago. It really is the emerald jewel in Pittsburgh's crown. I recommend parking in the lot by the tennis courts off of Braddock Avenue and looking at the park maps posted on the displays there, then walking down the wooden steps to the valley, or heading left along the trail that runs behind the grey stone schoolhouse. In the winter, park in the lower lot off Lancaster Road (turn left onto Hutchinson off of southbound Braddock to get to Lancaster). Don't miss hiking up to the Riverview trails which offer spectacular views of the Monongahela River basin.

Although it is a nice but relatively small park in a largely urban area, its not exactly safe. My only experience at Frick Park was with a large group of co-workers when we all got together to play football. Most of our cars were broken into and our personal belongings stolen. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, with people walking their dogs nearby!! I'll never go there again.

Recently moved to Pittsburgh from the Pacific Northwest and was looking for a place to get my daily dose of nature. Frick Park is perfect! I love exploring the hiking trails and discover new trails each time. I get to encounter wildlife (deer, birds, squirrels), babbling creeks, all under the cover of beautiful foliage.

It is great having an escape into nature so close to the city. I recommend this park to everyone!

Took our young boys to park, I haven't been to the park in years. It appears to have a little renovation. The blue slide is still there. The swing area was in need of cleanup. The water fountain was filthy and not working. I imagine with a paint, litter control the park could shine again.
