It was pouring the day we arrived. We would have loved to walk the island but had to check it out via car due to the rain! 😞 The island has a lot of history to it which makes it all that more interesting!

Ocracoke is a relatively small community that welcomes visitors and offers many exceptional opportunities to learn about its rich history. Many fine businesses exist here, especially restaurants, bars, accommodations, and shops. There are several beaches to choose from, all very clean and uncrowded. The only ways to get there are by boat or air, with frequent ferry services from the mainland and the Outer Banks. This relative remoteness facilitates one settling in and relaxing, yet plenty of fun and interesting activities can be easily accessed by walking, bicycling, renting a golf cart, or riding a shuttle.

We stayed in January - the weather was awful - it was very, very foggy so the ferries were not running as expected - there were very few restaurants or facilities open - those that were, were extremely overpriced and I would never return to any of them, especially Jason's - no one was very helpful nor did they care that we were stuck on the island!!! because of fog - no suggestions, no ideas, just "it's that time of year". Done- not going back.

It was an interesting, historic place, rent a golf cart. Some of the most beautiful beaches I have seen. The worst part of our trip was the hotel we stayed in. The Ocracoke Harbor Inn. The facility was clean but the hotel did a bait and switch. We paid for a high room with balcony overlooking the water and they put us in a ground floor, no balcony and no view, looking at the front of their big office building. We paid almost $80.00 more for the view and when we confronted management they said their is nothing they can do. Booking.com worked with the hotel mgt. And they finally agreed to give us a $50.00 refund. No surprise, they never issued the refund. I would say be ware of the bait and switch and dishonesty of this hotel.

When traveling Outer Banks can travel through Ocracoke from one end to the other & see what you would like to see. Can see the sights of lighthouse, beach and pony pen in half a day in April. Would have spent less time there & not spent the night. Instead would have done these things & then caught ferry to Hatteras to see more sights between Hatteras & Currituck lighthouses. Dinner was good at Howard's Pub.

We visited 1718 this time for the first time. Definitely a new favorite! Visited all of our favorite stores(Over the Moon, Kitty Hawk Kites, Ride the Wind) and had ice cream form the shop next to Kitty Hawk Kites. Always rent a golf cart from Island Golf Carts. I'm sure the other places are great also, that is just where we get ours! There is a new Art Gallery that we didn't get to visit. it's right across from Kitty Hawk Kites. I have heard really great things about it! Make sure to take a walk to Springers Point and the lighthouse! My favorite, favorite thing to do was go watch the sunset each night. Totally free! Totally beautiful! Easiest way to get around is via golf cart or bike. Park your car, save on gas!
